To Cut Down or Quit

It's up to you as to whether and when to change your drinking habits. Other people may influence your decision but, in the end, it’s your call. Not everyone who chooses to cut down or quit has experienced negative consequences as a result of drinking. Some reasons that people choose to change their drinking behaviors include:

  • To save money
  • To improve health
  • To improve relationships
  • To avoid hangovers
  • To lose weight or get fit
  • To do better at work or in school

When someone is drinking too much, making a change earlier is likely to be more successful and less destructive to individuals and their families. Quitting is strongly advised if you:

  • are or may become pregnant
  • are taking a medication that interacts negatively with alcohol
  • have a physical or mental condition that is caused or worsened by drinking
  • try cutting down but cannot stay within the limits you set
  • can you connect the dots between your drinking behaviors and your problems in life

Regardless of whether or not the conditions listed apply to you, you may choose to consult your physician about your drinking based on factors such as:

  • your age
  • a family history of alcohol problems
  • symptoms such as sleep disorders and sexual dysfunction
